Design Principles

The most important factors to consider when creating your site is your website's purpose & intended audience. Properly defining these two factors is essential to a successful website.

Purpose

Your website's purpose will define what type of website you end up with. Try thinking of a realistic online presence for your business that represents your needs & how much time or money you are willing to invest.

Websites can generally be classified by one of the following types:

  • Informative

Simply providing information about your business, products you sell, location and means of contact.
  • Interactive

Include all properties of an informative site plus the ability for the customer to interact with the website through product galleries, forums, or games.
  • Revenue Generating

Generally include all properties of an informative site plus the option of catelogueing products, selling products & accepting monetary transactions online.

Audience

Your audience are your clients, or anyone else you intend to have visit your site. Knowing your audience helps to build a site that targets their skills, keeps them entartains or informed with out loosing their focus. If a user gets lost navigating your website, they are likely to navigate somewhere else.

Things to consider about your audience include:

  • Computer Skills

Are they novice users or experienced. Will they be confused by a huge tabbed menu or will they instinctively know where to click.
  • Computer System

Do your users generally have up to date systems with the latest browsers and plug-ins installed? If not then you have to limit or provide alternatives to certain website elements.
  • Demographics

Are your users younger/older in age, speak a certain language or multiple languages. Do they use a different monetary system. All these have to be considered to keep your information relevant to your users.
